September was a mixed bag as far as weather with some chilly nights and some days that felt like the dog days of summer had returned.

High temperatures reached 95 degrees or higher on four days in September. While that’s hot, the average high was 88.2 degrees, 7.2 degrees cooler than the high for the same month last year. In fact, there were six nights where the low temperature was 65 degrees or less.

The milder weather should result in 27% less air conditioning use for September based on the Cooling Degree Days (CDDs). In other words, electricity usage will be lower compared to the same month last year.

Usage will also be much lower compared to August. The average temperature for September was 79.3 degrees, 9.6 degrees cooler than the average for August. The CDDs declined by 42% from August to September.

  August September Difference
Average temperature 88.9 79.3 -9.6 degrees cooler
Cooling Degree Days 746 434 -42% less AC use
Utilities and the federal government measure the impact of weather on energy usage by calculating Cooling Degree Days (CDD) and Heating Degree Days (HDD). To calculate the CDD, take the average temperature for a day and subtract it from 65. The higher the number, the more air conditioning will be needed to keep your home comfortable. North Texas received 2.24 inches of rain in September, about half an inch below normal.

While weather is a big factor in your CoServ bill, so is your electric rate. For the fourth month in a row, CoServ kept the Power Cost Recovery Factor (PCRF) negative so it subtracts from the base rate, making your cost per kilowatt lower.

CoServ has 100% control over its power purchases and strives to keep costs down. Adjustments are made to the PCRF to account for fluctuations in wholesale power costs. When we’re able to save money on power costs, we pass that on to you, as we did this month.
