Better pricing, bigger impact: The CoServ Advantage

When Tommy Noel bought a new home in Argyle, he was relieved to find out CoServ was the energy provider.
Tommy always shopped around for his electric provider – switching companies every 3 months to find the best rate, -even setting up a calendar reminder.
Choosing or shopping for electricity can be frustrating because other companies have the same goal – making a profit. Tommy said he would sign up for “random” electric companies that he never heard of.
“I would click yes and agree to all their things, and I would hope that this is a legit company,” said Tommy. “I like the idea that there are no contracts, and [CoServ’s] rate is comparable to what I used to pay when I changed companies every 3 months.”
An analysis of CoServ electric rates compared to the for-profit retail electric providers (REPs) found Members paid an average of $44 less per month, than customers in the deregulated parts of Texas. That’s a savings of more than $500 for the year. This is based on 12-month contracts for REP rates advertised monthly on PowerToChoose.org with 2,000 kilowatt-hours of usage.

But what about all the slick television advertisements offering free electricity? Don’t be fooled. For example, customers who choose the Free Nights & Solar Days 12 plan, offered by a popular Retail Electric Provider, will have free electricity from 8 p.m. through 4:59 a.m. each day. However, for the remaining 15 hours a day, they would be paying 25.8 cents per kWh for the energy charge plus the delivery charge of 5.18 cents per kWh for a total of more than 30 cents per kWh. That’s more than twice CoServ’s average standard residential rate for 2024.
The REPs hook consumers by offering free electricity but the devil is in the details and it all comes down to making a profit for shareholders. That’s not how CoServ operates. Visit CoServ.com/Rates for a transparent explanation of our electric rates. You’ll quickly see there’s no “Gotcha” involved.
CoServ has no shareholders. Our responsibility is to our Members, not shareholders. Any margins, or profits, are allocated back to Members in the form of Capital Credits.
The CoServ Advantage doesn’t stop there. As a CoServ Member, you elect fellow Members to serve on the Board of Directors and they make critical decisions on the direction of the co-op.
If you participate in Operation Roundup, where your bill is rounded up to the nearest dollar, you are also contributing to the CoServ Charitable Foundation (CCF). Those pennies may not seem like much but when combined with other electric Members and gas Customers, it adds up to more than $1 million a year awarded to nonprofits making a difference in your community.
CoServ is also active in all 23 school districts that we serve, presenting STEM-related lessons, electric safety programs and scholarships. We are partnered with the fire departments in our service area, offering safety training, appreciation events and grants through CCF. Our Employees also have a heart to give back through volunteer opportunities in the community.
The CoServ Advantage is as relevant today as it was 88 years ago, perhaps even more so, because access to reliable electricity has never been more critical.
Thank you for being a CoServ Member!
